Main Topic Teaching and Learning Methods in Medical Education

PI: Josef Smolle

Main focus: Since the medical curricula have undergone a considerably transformation during the last decades, quality of teaching and learning has gained considerable awareness. Our institute places particular emphasis on acceptance and efficiency of e-learning, with a special focus on microlearning. In numerous quasi-experimental settings, e-learning types, student satisfaction and knowledge acquisition are evaluated. In addition, our main e-learning platforms (MOODLE, knowledgeFox) are used for learning analytics.

Network: Our institute closely cooperates with the staff unit “Teaching with Media”. Staff members provide the necessary e-learning infrastructure and support teachers and students as well. They aim at increasing e-learning content and e-learning quality. In addition, the team of the staff unit provides the necessary data for scientific evaluation. All these activities are embedded in a region-wide network of Styrian universities, comprising the Technology-Enhanced Learning Styria community, and are in cooperation with fnma (Forum of New Media in Teaching Austria).

Project

Microlearning in Medical Propaedeutics: Harmonization, Compatibility and Community Outreach

  • Microlearning denotes digital learning with mobile devices in small steps, independent of time and location. In 2017, the Medical University of Graz started this project together with the Medical Faculty of the Johannes Kepler University Linz. The project was funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science. Up to now, a broad variety of disciplines offer microlearning courses, with a total of more than 25.000 knowledge cards. Until November 2022, students have accessed these cards for more than 14 million times.
  • The project was supported by the Federal Ministry from 2017 to 2019 and is now an integral part of the e-learning activities of both universities.
  • Funding: Federal Ministry of Science (2017 to 2019)
  • Partnership: Medical Faculty of the Johannes Kepler University Linz
